  This kind of feature does not scale well in term of performance. We do not plan to have this in near future.

  JomSocial is also great software for "closed" groups (for example a school class, university class or military class etc). The membership of the group is defined, everyone is a friend and well-known to each other. It is a "closed" group of members. In this context the "friend" feature is meaningless and causes more problems than it is worth, for example you cannot "tag" people until you have become their friend etc, everyone then needs to tag everyone else as their "friend" which is tiresome. The alternative is to create thousands of entries in the database linking everyone to everyone else.....
